乔木,高3-8m;树冠宽广而平展;树皮暗红褐色,老时粗糙呈鳞片状;小枝细长,无毛,有光泽,绿色,向阳处转变成红色,具大量小皮孔;冬芽圆锥形,顶端钝,外被短柔毛,常2-3个簇生,中间为叶芽,两侧为花芽。叶片长圆披针形、椭圆披针形或倒卵状披针形,长7-15cm,宽2-3.5cm,先端渐尖,基部宽楔形,上面无毛,下面在脉腋间具少数短柔毛或无毛,叶边具细锯齿或粗锯齿,齿端具腺体或无腺体;叶柄粗壮,长1-2cm,常具1至数枚腺体,有时无腺体。花单生,先于叶开放,直径2.5-3.5cm;花梗极短或几无梗;萼筒钟形,被短柔毛,稀几无毛,绿色而具红色斑点;萼片卵形至长圆形,顶端圆钝,外被短柔毛;花瓣长圆状椭圆形至宽倒卵形,粉红色,罕为白色;雄蕊约20-30,花药绯红色;花柱几与雄蕊等长或稍短;子房被短柔毛。果实形状和大小均有变异,卵形、宽椭圆形或扁圆形,直径(3)5-7(12)cm,长几与宽相等,色泽变化由淡绿白色至橙黄色,常在向阳面具红晕,外面密被短柔毛,稀无毛,腹缝明显,果梗短而深入果洼;果肉白色、浅绿白色、黄色、橙黄色或红色,多汁有香味,甜或酸甜;核大,离核或粘核,椭圆形或近圆形,两侧扁平,顶端渐尖,表面具纵、横沟纹和孔穴;种仁味苦,稀味甜。花期3-4月,果实成熟期因品种而异,通常为8-9月。
The tree is 3-8 meters tall, with a wide and flat crown. The bark is dark reddish-brown, rough and scaly when old. The twigs are slender, smooth, shiny, green, turning red on the sunny side, with numerous small pores. The winter buds are conical, blunt at the top, covered with short soft hairs, usually clustered in 2-3, with leaf buds in the middle and flower buds on both sides. The leaves are long oval-lanceolate, elliptic-lanceolate, or inverted ovate-lanceolate, 7-15 cm long and 2-3.5 cm wide, gradually pointed at the tip, broadly wedge-shaped at the base, smooth on the upper surface, with a few short soft hairs or smooth in the vein axils on the lower surface, finely serrated or coarsely serrated, with glandular or non-glandular teeth at the edges. The leaf stalk is stout, 1-2 cm long, usually with 1 to several glands, sometimes without glands. The flowers are solitary, blooming before the leaves, with a diameter of 2.5-3.5 cm; the flower stalk is very short or nearly absent; the calyx tube is bell-shaped, covered with short soft hairs, rarely nearly hairless, green with red spots; the sepals are ovate to oblong, with a rounded blunt tip, covered with short soft hairs; the petals are oblong-elliptic to broadly ovate, pink, rarely white; there are about 20-30 stamens, with crimson anthers; the pistil is nearly as long as or slightly shorter than the stamens; the ovary is covered with short soft hairs. The shape and size of the fruit vary, being ovate, broadly elliptic, or flattened round, with a diameter of (3) 5-7 (12) cm, nearly as long as wide, ranging in color from light greenish-white to orange-yellow, often with a red blush on the sunny side, densely covered with short soft hairs, rarely hairless, with a distinct ventral suture, a short fruit stalk deeply embedded in the fruit cavity; the flesh is white, light greenish-white, yellow, orange-yellow, or red, juicy and fragrant, sweet or sweet-sour; the large stone is free or adherent, elliptical or nearly round, flattened on both sides, gradually pointed at the tip, with longitudinal and transverse grooves and pores on the surface; the kernel tastes bitter, rarely sweet. The flowering period is March-April, and the fruit ripens in August-September, varying with the variety.
