Viburnum setigerum is a deciduous shrub up to 4 meters tall. The buds and leaves turn black, dark brown, or grayish-brown when dried; young branches are initially pale yellow, later turning grayish-brown. Winter buds are usually less than 5mm long, with two pairs of outer scales, the outermost pair being half to two-thirds the length of the bud. Leaves are opposite, with petioles 1–1.5 cm long.
