Small herbaceous plant. The stem is weak, 5–10 cm long, slightly prostrate, with roots at the nodes. Leaves are opposite; stipules are triangular, broad at the base, adnate to the petiole, and long-acuminate; leaf blades are lanceolate-oblong, 7–16 mm long, with a short or slightly acute apex, cuneate base, and minute scales on both surfaces, with 2–3 pairs of inconspicuous lateral veins; papery texture. Flowers are small, 2–3 mm in diameter, solitary and terminal; sessile or nearly so; involucre small, cup-shaped, with two pointed tips; calyx truncate; corolla wheel-shaped, 4-lobed, with oblong, blunt lobes; stamens 4, inserted at the base of the corolla, exserted; ovary 2-celled, each cell containing one ovule. Fruit is an achene about 2 mm in diameter, purplish-black. Flowering occurs in autumn.
