灰毛大青又名灰毛臭茉莉、粘毛赪桐、大叶白花鬼灯笼。灌木，高1-3.5m。全株密被平展或倒向灰褐色长柔毛。小枝略呈四棱形，髓疏松，干后不中空。单叶对生；叶柄长1.5-12cm；叶片厚纸质，近心形、宽卵形或卵形，长6-18cm，宽4-15cm，先端渐尖，基部近心形或截形，边缘具齿或全缘，两面均被柔毛，脉上密被灰褐色平展柔毛。聚伞花序密集成头状，常2-5枝生于茎顶；苞片叶状，卵形或椭圆形；花萼钟状，长约1.3cm，有柔毛，由绿变为红色，具5棱角及稀疏腺点，5深裂达萼的中部，裂片宽卵形或卵形，渐尖；花冠白色或淡红色，外面被腺毛或柔毛，花冠管纤细，长约2mm，裂片5，倒卵状长圆形，向外平展，长5-6mm；雄蕊4，与花柱同伸出花冠外。核果近球形，径约7mm，熟时紫黑色，藏于红色增大的宿萼内。花、果期4-10月。
Grey-haired large green, also known as grey-haired stinky jasmine, sticky-haired red toon, and large-leaf white-flowered ghost lantern, is a shrub 1–3.5 m tall. The whole plant is densely covered with flat or downward-pointing gray-brown long soft hairs. Young branches are slightly quadrangular, with loose pith that remains non-hollow when dried. Leaves are opposite; petioles 1.5–12 cm long; leaf blades thickly papery, nearly cordate, broadly ovate, or ovate, 6–18 cm long and 4–15 cm wide, apex gradually acuminate, base nearly cordate or truncate, margins toothed or entire, both surfaces pubescent, veins densely covered with appressed gray-brown soft hairs. Inflorescences are dense cymose heads, usually 2–5 arising at stem tops; bracts leaf-like, ovate or elliptic. Calyx campanulate, about 1.3 cm long, hairy, turning from green to red, with 5 ridges and sparse glandular dots, deeply 5-lobed to mid-length, lobes broadly ovate or ovate, acuminate. Corolla white or pale pink, externally glandular-pubescent or soft-hairy; corolla tube slender, ca. 2 mm long; lobes 5, oblanceolate-oblong, spreading outward, 5–6 mm long. Stamens 4, exserted with style. Drupelets nearly spherical, ca. 7 mm in diameter, ripening purplish-black, enclosed within the enlarged red persistent calyx. Flowering and fruiting from April to October.
