Citron, also known as Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis, is an irregularly branched shrub or small tree. The new tender branches, buds, and flower buds are dark purplish-red. The stems and branches are thorny, with thorns up to 4 cm long. Leaves are simple, occasionally with solitary compound leaves that have joints but no winged leaflets. Petioles are short; leaf blades are elliptical or ovate-elliptical, 6–12 cm long and 3–6 cm wide, sometimes larger, with a rounded or blunt apex, rarely shortly pointed, and shallow blunt teeth along the margin. The raceme bears up to 12 flowers, sometimes accompanied by axillary single flowers. Flowers are bisexual, tending toward unisexuality with pistil degeneration. There are 5 petals, 1.5–2 cm long; 30–50 stamens; the ovary is cylindrical, the style stout and long, and the stigma capitate. The fruit is ellipsoidal, nearly round, or spindle-shaped with narrow ends, weighing up to 2000 grams. The peel is pale yellow, rough, thick or relatively thin, and difficult to peel. The inner layer is white or slightly pale yellow, cottony and soft. There are 10–15 segments; the pulp is colorless, nearly transparent, or pale creamy yellow, crisp in texture, sour or slightly sweet, with a pleasant fragrance. Seeds are small and smooth, with milky white cotyledons, polyembryonic or monoembryonic. Flowering occurs from April to May, and fruiting from October to November.
