药材性状全草长30-60cm。茎圆柱形，棕黄色，基部灰黑色，表面有纵纹及疣状皮孔，呈黄白色；质硬易折断，断面白色，松泡中空；叶多卷曲，或脱落，棕绿色或黑绿色；质脆易碎。残存荚果呈棕褐色。气微，味淡。
The whole herb is 30-60 cm long. The stem is cylindrical, brownish-yellow, with a grey-black base, and has longitudinal ridges and wart-like lenticels that appear yellow-white on the surface. It is hard in texture and easily breaks, with a white, loose, hollow pith. Leaves are often curled or shed, appearing brownish-green or blackish-green, brittle and easily broken. Remaining pods are brownish-brown. Odor is faint; taste is mild.

Flowers are axillary, pedicellate, solitary or 2 to several forming a short raceme; sepals 5, separate, sparsely pubescent externally; petals 5, yellow; stamens 4, sometimes 5; ovary densely covered with short hairs. The pod is flat, hairy, dehiscent, 3-8 cm long, about 5 mm wide, containing 6-12 seeds; seeds are flattened, nearly rhomboid, and smooth.
