尾穗苋，又名老枪谷、穟冠花、红苋菜。一年生草本，高达1.5米；茎直立，粗壮，具钝棱角，单一或稍分枝，绿色，或常带粉红色，幼时有短柔毛，后渐脱落。叶片菱状卵形或菱状披针形，长4-15厘米，宽2-8厘米，顶端短渐尖或圆钝，具凸尖，基部宽楔形，稍不对称，全缘或波状缘，绿色或红色，除在叶脉上稍有柔毛外，两面无毛；叶柄长1-15厘米，绿色或粉红色，疏生柔毛。圆锥花序顶生，下垂，有多数分枝，中央分枝特长，由多数穗状花序形成，顶端钝，花密集成雌花和雄花混生的花簇；苞片及小苞片披针形，长3毫米，红色，透明，顶端尾尖，边缘有疏齿，背面有1中脉；花被片长2-2.5毫米，红色，透明，顶端具凸尖，边缘互压，有1中脉，雄花的花被片矩圆形，雌花的花被片矩圆状披针形；雄蕊稍超出；柱头3，长不及1毫米。胞果近球形，直径3毫米，上半部红色，超出花被片。种子近球形，直径1毫米，淡棕黄色，有厚的环。花期7-8月，果期9-10月。
Amaranthus caudatus, also known as Laoqiangu, Suiguanhua, or red amaranth. An annual herb, up to 1.5 meters tall; stem erect, stout, with blunt angles, single or slightly branched, green or often tinged with pink, pubescent when young, glabrescent later. Leaves rhombic-ovate or rhombic-lanceolate, 4–15 cm long, 2–8 cm wide, apex short acuminate or obtuse with mucro, base broadly cuneate, slightly asymmetric, margin entire or undulate, green or red, sparsely pubescent only on veins, otherwise glabrous on both surfaces. Petioles 1–15 cm long, green or pink, sparsely hairy. Terminal panicle inflorescence, pendulous, many-branched, central branches especially long, composed of numerous spike-like clusters, blunt at tip, flowers densely packed in mixed clusters of male and female flowers. Bracts and bracteoles lanceolate, 3 mm long, red, transparent, acuminate, margins serrulate, midvein on back. Perianth segments 2–2.5 mm long, red, transparent, apically mucronate, margins overlapping, midvein present; in male flowers rectangular, in female flowers oblong-lanceolate. Stamens slightly exserted; stigmas 3, less than 1 mm long. Utricle nearly spherical, 3 mm in diameter, upper half red, exceeding perianth. Seeds nearly spherical, 1 mm in diameter, pale yellowish-brown, with a thick ring. Flowering from July to August, fruiting from September to October.
