2. Treatment for rheumatoid arthritis: Qinghao root 15-30g, cow tail or pig feet 7 inches. Stew for about 2 hours, take before meals. (From "Fujian Materia Medica")

Species: Artemisia annua, a plant in the Asteraceae family.

Morphological Characteristics

Annual herb, 40-150cm tall. The whole plant has a strong volatile oil odor. Stem erect, longitudinally striped, much branched, smooth and glabrous. Basal leaves lie flat on the ground and wither at flowering; stem leaves alternate, green when young, turning yellowish-brown when old, glabrous, with short petioles, becoming sessile upwards; leaf blades usually tripinnately dissected, segments short and slender, with minute powdery soft hairs, dark green above, pale green beneath, with tiny hairs or powdery glandular spots; leaf axis with narrow wings on both sides; upper stem leaves gradually become smaller and linear. Heads small, spherical, about 2mm in diameter, with slender soft pedicels, numerous, arranged in panicles; involucre small, globular; all florets tubular, yellow, female florets surrounding central bisexual ones. Achenes elliptical. Flowering from August to October, fruiting from October to November.

Distributed throughout northern and southern China.

Growing Environment

Grows in open fields, mountain slopes, roadsides, riverbanks, and similar habitats.
